Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born in 1883 in Medhengladbach, Germany. He was of German descent. Before the First World War, while traveling through England, he practiced boxing and performed various points in the circus.

As a German prisoner of war, during the First World War, he was interned on the Isle of Man. During the flu pandemic, in 1918, he devised exercises for bed-bound victims, even though the conditions were not ideal for it. So, in fact, the hospital bed became the basis for the development of Pilates.

After the end of the war, he returned to Germany, and with his exercises, he started training boxers and police officers. After moving to the United States, together with his wife, he opened the first training studio in 1926 in New York.

Joseph much preferred exercises with a small number of performances, which contain precise movements and require control and form. He designed more than 500 types of various exercises, and most of them include training on the mat. These are gymnastic movements that are performed without any apparatus or weights.

He believed that physical and mental health complemented each other, and that it did – “Healthy body healthy mind”.
